Nor Cal Boys Basketball Tournament

The Calvary Boys entered the 39th annual LSAA Northern California Boys Round Ball Tournament as the 2nd seed in a field of 18. In their first game on Friday they faced off against St. Luke of Santa Rosa.Calvary led early in the game and never looked back as they coasted to 61 to 39 victory.

In the morning game on Saturday, the boys faced arch rival Prince of Peace. Employing a pressure defense to help keep the Patriots at bay, and a surging offense led by Robert Brue and London Penland, Calvary went on to an easy 16 point win.

The evening game pitted the Cougars against the number one seed in the tournament, powerhouse Zion Piedmont. Calvary knew the challenge ahead as no opponent has stayed within 30 points of the Lions all year. Even more impressive is that Zion has won this tournament 7 of the last 8 years. The game was close in the first half as Calvary matched Zion basket for basket. At half time Zion lead was only 4 points, 27 to 23. Things turned in the second half as Zion's speed was simply to much for the Cougars, as Piedmont eventually wore the Calvary boys down, winning by 22. Final Zion, Piedmont 63 to 41.

The loss put Calvary in a position to play in a semi final game on Sunday. The third place trophy game matched another Bay Area league competitor, St Johns of Napa. Both teams came out shooting in the first half as they went back and forth down the floor. St. John's went on a late 2nd quarter spurt to take a half-time lead and were looking very confident in their play. The second half was more of the same story as the Cougars and Eagles came out trading baskets the whole third quarter. In the fourth, foul trouble got the best of Calvary and St. Johns began to pull away quickly. The stunned Cougars could not regroup fast enough to slow the Eagles down as they ran on to victory. Leading the way for Calvary was Robert Brue with a game high 25 points.

(Final Score St Johns 57-39)

Of note: Robert Brue of Calvary was named to the All Tournament Team.

Congratulations to our boys for an excellent tournament....
