Boys'

Basketball

Tournament -

Cougars Finish Strong

Taking 3rd Place!

Anyone lucky enough to catch last weekend's season ending Boys Roundball Tournament held in Redwood City, will tell you that they were treated to some of the most exciting Calvary basketball they have ever seen.

In Friday's opening game Calvary played a young but enthusiastic Redeemer team. The Braves were simply no match for the Cougars as the Calvary Boys, with the help of Darryl Ng and Javier Putnam on defense put the game away early on their way to a 20-point victory. Final: Calvary 42, Redeemer 18.

On Saturday morning Calvary faced Central Valley's number two seed, St. Peters of Elk Grove. Calvary led early and continued to extend their lead throughout the game. The outside shooting of Calvary and their overall height advantage was too much for the smaller Central Valley team. Trevor Contier scored a season high 42- points including ten 3-pointers, and the defense of Richard Atthowe, Jonathan Anene, and Christopher Gaines frustrated the St Peter shooters. Calvary got even more help from bench players Jake Wilkins (4 points) and Karl Mena (2 points). The Boys coasted to an easy 58 to 38 victory.

In the afternoon game, Calvary matched up against arch rival Prince of Peace of Fremont. The game ping ponged back and forth throughout the first half before the Cougars stretched out to a 10-point half time lead. Things began to change when Defensive Team Leader Robbie Brue picked up his 4th personal foul early in the third period. With Brue having to hold back on his normally intense defense, the Patriots climbed back into the game. Richard Atthowe, along with Chris Gaines and Trevor Contier helped to keep the game close, but as the clock ran out in the fourth period, the Cougars found themselves on the short end of an 11-point deficit. Final: Prince of Peace 41, Calvary 30.

On Sunday, Calvary faced West Portal of San Francisco in a battle for the third place. Still suffering from the loss to Prince of Peace, the Cougars came out flat and were looking up at an 18-point first quarter deficit. However the boys refused to use their Saturday loss as an excuse to get them down and began to chip into the West Portal lead throughout the second period. At half time they had closed with 8 points.

Trailing by 11 entering the fourth period, and with the clock working against them, Team leaders Richard Atthowe, Robbie Brue and Trevor Contier took matters into their own hands. With less than 4 minutes on the clock, Richard Atthowe hit a 3-pointer, Robbie Brue ran the length of the floor for an easy lay-up, and Trevor Contier stole the in-bound pass and sank a 6-footer to cut the lead to 3. With less than a minute the Cougars had fought all the way back to tie the score.

With 27 seconds left in regulation, and the game tied, West Portal missed an outside shot and Jonathan Anene made a clutch rebound that gave the Cougars an opportunity to win in regulation. With only 18 seconds left on the clock and the score tied 51 to 51, Coach Brian Pye used his last time out to set up one last play. As the clock wound down, Trevor Contier found Chris Gaines cutting across the key and with 3 seconds left in the game Gaines hit a jump shot that put Calvary ahead. It was their first lead of the game. West Portal tried a desperation shot that fell well short of the basket and Calvary walked away with a 53 to 51 victory, and a third place finish in the tournament. As a result of their efforts Trevor Contier and Richard Atthowe were named to the "All Tournament" Basketball Team. Congratulations to the Calvary Boys for their third place finish.
